Indian Railways is included in the world’s largest rail network. Every day lakhs of people travel by Indian Railways. At the same time, Indian Railways implements many rules to make people’s travel safe. One of these rules is emergency chain. Which is installed in every coach of the train so that the train can be stopped in emergency situations. But many times people pull the chain unnecessarily due to lack of awareness or carelessness. Due to which not only that train but also the speed and timing of many trains coming behind are affected.
This is the reason why Indian Railways has made strict rules regarding chain pulling. In such a situation, let us tell you today when you cannot relax in the train. What is the rule of chain pulling which you should know before traveling in railways?
When can one pull the chain in a train?
According to Railways, the chain in the train can be pulled only in emergency situations. In these situations, if an elderly person, child or passenger is left behind at the station, the chain can be pulled. At the same time, if someone has a medical emergency, an accident like fire in the train, a security related situation like theft or feeling of danger or a passenger falls from a moving train, then pulling the chain is considered correct in these circumstances.
When can you not pull the train chain?
If you pull the chain without any solid reason or jokingly, it is considered a serious violation of railway rules. If you pull a train only when it is late in getting off or on board, it is still a violation of the rules. Whereas pulling the chain without any emergency and for all reasons like minor inconvenience is considered a crime as per the rules of Indian Railways. According to Section 141 of the Railway Act 1989, if a passenger pulls the emergency chain without any compelling reason, action can be taken against him. Whereas pulling the chain without any reason can lead to a jail term up to 1 year or a fine up to Rs 1000 or both together.
What happens when the train chain is pulled?
As soon as the chain of the train is pulled, the valve installed in the corner of the coach rotates and the air accumulated in the brake pipe starts coming out. Due to this, the speed of the train reduces and the train stops after some time. Through this alert, the Railways immediately comes to know that the chain has been pulled in the coach. After which RPF or police reaches that compartment and investigates. At the same time, unnecessarily pulling the chain in the train not only causes delay in the train but also affects the safety and timely travel of thousands of passengers. Apart from this, sometimes train pulling done jokingly can also become the cause of a major incident.
