Dhyanchand was born on 29 August 1905 in Allahabad. His real name was Dhyan Singh, but later he became famous all over the world as Dhyanchand. This is the incident when the German dictator Hitler himself was so impressed by Dhyanchand’s game that he offered him to give a high position in the citizenship of Germany and the army. Dhyanchand’s hockey journey and Hitler’s offer
Dhyanchand started playing hockey at the age of 14. After joining the army, he started playing for the army’s hockey team. His game there rapidly caught everyone’s attention. At night, he used to practice for hours in moon light, so his friends started calling him a few. It was from here that his name was Dhyanchand. He scored more than 1000 goals in his career and told the whole world about India’s hockey strength.
In such a situation, the Olympic game took place in Berlin, the capital of Germany in 1936. At that time, the ruler of Germany was Adolf Hitler, who was infamous for dictatorship. Dhyanchand performed such a game in that tournament that everyone became his crazy. India defeated Germany 8–1 in the final and Dhyanchand scored three goals alone. Hitler was surprised to see his game. He could not even imagine that a player could control the ball so beautifully. After the match, Hitler offered Dhyanchand a high in his army. Also asked him to give him citizenship of Germany, Hitler wanted Dhyanchand to play for Germany.
What did Dhyanchand respond to German’s citizenship offer?
When Hitler offered Dhyanchand to Germany’s citizenship, the hockey magician turned down this offer without any hesitation. He told Hitler, I have eaten the salt of India. My country is India and I am right there. This one answer proved that Dhyanchand was not just a great player, but also a true patriot. By rejecting Hitler’s offer, Dhyanchand showed that a player was not only on the field but also in patriotism. When India was not independent, he still dreamed of a tricolor and one day that dream was also fulfilled.
Dhyanchand was awarded the Padma Bhushan in 1956. He joined the army at the age of 16. In today’s time, players retire at the age of 35. But Dhyanchand showed the magic of his hockey to the world even at the age of 43. He scored 52 goals in East Africa in 1948.
