In the world of Indian film music, many names shine, but there are some stars whose light never fade. Music composer Sachin Dev Burman i.e. SD Burman was one such shining star. His songs were not only heard, but are also felt. He considered music as the voice of the soul. This was the reason that he did not compromise in his music.
Once, he insisted on getting a song re -recorded and when Lata Mangeshkar refused, he was angry with him for five years. This story became an example of his perfectionist nature.
SD Burman’s Journey
SD Burman was born on 1 October 1906. He belonged to the royal family of Tripura. He was deeply interested in folk music since childhood. They used to listen to folk songs and inspire them by roaming around in the villages. He did his studies from Kolkata University and his career started from there. In 1932, he joined Kolkata Radio Station as a singer and soon started giving music for Bengali films.
In the 1940s, SD Burman came to Mumbai and from here his journey started in Hindi cinema. He got his first big opportunity from the 1946 film ‘Shikari’. After this, he never looked back.
His music became an important part in films of directors like Gurudutt, Devanand and Bimal Roy. “Thirsty,” guide, “Bandini,” Abhiman, “Chalti Ka Naam Paury,” Shabnam, “Tere Mere Sapne,” Jewel Thef, “Paper Ke Phool,” Sujata, and ‘Prem Pujari “, he has also been in the hearts of people even today. His special thing was that he used to create such a unique combination of classical music, folk music, and Western sound in his music.
Lata did not talk to Mangeshkar for 5 years
SD Burman was not only a good musician, he was also very stubborn and crazy about perfection. There was an interesting anecdote between him and Lata Mangeshkar. Lata ji recorded a song ‘Pag Thumak Chalat’ for the 1958 film ‘Stars Se Ahead’. Burman Saheb had also done it ‘OK’ after recording, but after a few days he called Lata Mangeshkar and said that he wants to record this song again, because he feels that there may be some more improvement in it. Lata Mangeshkar was going on a journey at that time, so she refused.
Burman Saheb felt bad to refuse him and he was so angry that he did not do any work with Lata Mangeshkar for the next five years. This resentment ended when his son, Rahul Dev Burman (Pancham Da), insisted on singing Lata Mangeshkar in his first film ‘Chhota Nawab’ (1962). It was difficult to postpone the point of Pancham da and thus Burman Saheb reconciled Lata. After this, both of them worked together on many memorable songs.
The Government of India honored him on many forums for his achievements. In 2007, a postage stamp was also released in his honor. The Tripura government also offers SD Burman Memorial Award every year. He died on 31 October 1975.
