How Often Should You Replace Underwear:There are some things which are always in contact with our body, one of them is undergarments. Unlike outerwear, innerwear is directly exposed to sweat, bacteria, dead body cells and body odor. Most people wash them regularly, but experts say that just washing is not enough. Let us tell you after how many months or years you should change your underwear.

According to experts, undergarments also have a fixed age. Even though they may look clean and fine on the surface, they cannot be used forever. It is generally recommended that innerwear be changed every 6 to 12 months. With time, such changes start taking place in the fibers of the clothes which create a favorable environment for bacteria and fungus to grow.

What are the disadvantages?

Wearing old or not properly cleaned undergarments can cause skin irritation, itching, infection and other hygiene related problems. It is also very important to change from time to time. According to Dr. Saurabh Sethi, a renowned gastroenterologist and liver expert trained at AIIMS, Harvard and Stanford, it is important to clean it after every use.

Why is it necessary to change?

Actually, due to continuous use and washing, small holes start forming in the fibers of the clothes. Bacteria, fungus, dead skin and bodily fluids can get trapped in these very small holes, which are not possible to completely remove with normal washing. This accumulated dirt can cause foul smell and skin infection. There are some signs which indicate that it is time to change undergarments. If the elastic becomes loose, the fabric starts becoming thin or small holes start appearing, then understand that it should be replaced. Stubborn stains that persist even after washing, or foul odor even after washing, are also signs that the fabric has lost its quality. Fading of color is also a sign of damage to the fabric.

What do experts say?

The American Academy of Dermatology recommends that undergarments be changed daily, especially when there is excessive sweating or the weather is hot. The Mayo Clinic also says that in hot, humid or dusty environments, innerwear may have to be changed more than once a day. Body heat, moisture and friction create a favorable environment for microbial growth, which can increase the risk of infection.

The choice of fabric is also important. Research shows that natural and breathable fabrics like cotton are better for the skin. They absorb moisture and maintain air flow, which reduces the risk of yeast and bacterial infections. In contrast, synthetic fabrics can trap moisture and increase the chance of irritation or allergies.
