Anti-India rhetoric in Bangladesh for the last few days has increased the distance between the two countries. External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar reached Dhaka on Wednesday (31 December 2025) to attend the funeral of Khaleda Zia. During this, he met Tariq Rahman, son of Khaleda Zia and acting president of Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP). During the tension between the two countries, his visit is being considered very important from diplomatic point of view.
‘S Jaishankar’s visit should not be seen from the perspective of bilateral relations’
Meanwhile, Bangladesh’s Foreign Affairs Advisor Mohammad Tauhid Hussain has said that Indian Foreign Minister S Jaishankar’s visit to Dhaka should not be seen from the perspective of bilateral relations or politics. He also said that whether his visit will reduce the tension between the two countries or not will become clear only in the future. Mohammad Tauheed said that representatives of all South Asian countries including the Indian Foreign Minister had attended the funeral of Khaleda Zia.
‘S Jaishankar’s visit to Bangladesh is a good sign’
According to the Dhaka Tribune report, he said, ‘Indian Foreign Minister S Jaishankar’s visit to Bangladesh was short, but he attended the entire program and then left. This is a good sign. We should not make any more sense out of his visit than this. When Mohammed Tauheed was asked whether there was any personal meeting with S Jaishankar, he said that there was no scope for face-to-face discussion.
‘Khalida Zia’s image was good even in neighboring countries’
He said, ‘Another foreign guest was present there. The Speaker of Pakistan was also there and he also shook hands with him. These are matters of etiquette which everyone follows. There was no political discussion during their conversation. Referring to late BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia, the Foreign Affairs Advisor said that her image was good not only in Bangladesh but also in neighboring countries. He further said that it was natural for regional leaders to be present to condole his death.
Tariq Rahman is considered a strong contender for the post of Prime Minister in the parliamentary elections to be held on February 12 in Bangladesh. During his meeting with Rehman, Jaishankar expressed confidence that Zia’s vision and values will guide the development of the partnership between the two countries.
