In today’s fast-paced life, maintaining balance between work and personal life is becoming the biggest challenge. As much as mobile phones, email and messaging apps have made work easier, it has also started interfering in our personal lives. The situation is such that office work is no longer limited to the office only, but has also reached home, holidays and even sick days.

In many countries of the world, the demand for the right to disconnect is now gaining momentum. This simply means that the employee should not be forced to respond to office calls, mails or messages after the scheduled working hours. But the situation in India is telling a different story.

A recent survey conducted on job search platform Indeed has revealed shocking figures. According to the survey, even though employers in India believe that there should be clear boundaries between work and personal life, the ground reality is completely opposite to this.

The report shows that 9 out of every 10 employees receive calls, messages or emails even after office hours are over. What is even more worrying is that 85 percent of employees are contacted by their managers even during sick leave or official holiday, meaning that there is no point in being sick or on leave.

The survey also revealed that 88 percent of Indian employees remain connected to the office regularly even outside working hours. The main reason for this is fear. About 79 percent of employees are worried that if they do not respond to calls or messages, their promotion may be stopped or their image in the office may be tarnished. This culture of always being available has left employees mentally and physically exhausted. People are feeling compelled to remain connected to work even at the cost of their health, family and personal time.

The issue has also been raised in Parliament

The interesting thing is that now the demand for making a law regarding this serious problem has also started rising. A Personal Member’s Bill was introduced in the Lok Sabha during the Winter Session of Parliament in 2025, in which it was said that the right to leave from work should be legalized for the employees. Its purpose was to reduce stress and promote better work-life balance.

Gen Z’s Baby Boomers

The survey has also revealed a big difference in thinking between generations. About 88 percent of Baby Boomers (people born between 1946 and 1964) believe that if they get a call even after office hours, it makes them feel important. Being constantly available to them is a sign of dedication and responsibility. On the other hand, the thinking of Gen Z (youth born between 1997 and 2012) is completely different. Of these, only 50 percent consider being contacted after office hours as positive. Not only this, 63 percent of Gen Z employees say that if their right to walk away from work is not respected, they may even decide to leave the job. This clearly shows that the new generation is giving more importance to mental health, personal time and balanced life.

The employer is also in trouble

The situation of employers is also not easy. According to the survey, 79 percent of employers believe that implementing a policy like Right to Disconnect would be a good step. But 66 percent fear that it may reduce productivity. At the same time, 81 percent of employers are also worried that if work-life balance is not respected, they may lose good and talented employees. However, a positive sign is that 81 percent of employers are willing to pay extra for work done after regular working hours.

In the report, India has also been compared with Australia and Singapore. In Australia, 90 percent of employees work beyond office hours, but only 47 percent of employers believe that imposing strict limits would reduce productivity. In Singapore, 93 percent of employees work outside the office and 78 percent of employers here are concerned about productivity. It is clear from this that this problem exists in almost every country in the Asia-Pacific region.
