Getting admission in Panjab University is the dream of thousands of students every year. The ranking of the university and the quality of education make it among the top universities of the country. Often students and their parents remain confused about what percentage of seats are kept in which category and who gets how much relaxation.
First of all, it is important to understand that the university keeps two types of seats in every course. One is ‘Open Category Seats’ and the other is ‘Reserved Category Seats’. According to the rules of the university, 55.5% of the total seats in any course are for open category students. This means that these seats are filled completely on the basis of merit and no reservation is applicable here. Whereas 44.5% seats are reserved for reserve category. These reserved seats have also been divided into different parts.
Who gets reservation?
The largest share is of SC students. 15% of the total seats are reserved for students who come from Scheduled Castes. After this, 7.5% seats are for Scheduled Tribe i.e. ST category students. For students of both these categories, the university also has a rule that where minimum marks are required, they are given a relaxation of up to 5%, so that they can easily become eligible for admission. However, this relaxation is not applicable in courses like MBBS. Not only this, if SC or ST seats remain vacant, then efforts are made to fill the seats by giving additional relaxation to the students of these categories, so that no seat remains vacant.
Apart from these, 5% seats are kept for students of OBC i.e. Backward Classes. Like SC/ST, they can also get relaxation of 5% marks if any minimum marks are fixed in the course. After this, 3% seats are for physically handicapped students. But the benefit of these seats is available only to those students whose disability is at least 40% and it is certified by the Medical Board. The special thing is that out of these 3% seats, 1% seats are kept especially for those students who are completely blind or have low vision. Such students are also given 5% additional marks to make merit in open category, that is, they rise a little above the competition.
Reservation even for those who do well in sports
Panjab University also reserves 5% seats for students with achievements in sports. This reservation is available to those students who have performed in sports at the state, national or international level. After this, 5% seats are kept for those families whose members have been martyred while serving in the Army, CRPF, BSF or Police or have become disabled due to injury while on duty. These seats are divided into seven different categories, in which children of martyrs get first priority.
They also get the benefit of reservation
Apart from this, 2% seats are for those families who were affected in the 1984 riots or have lost a member in the violence of terrorism. These candidates have to bring a certificate from the District Magistrate. Similarly, 2% seats are for children or grandchildren of freedom fighters, provided their family has received government pension or honour.
