A Pakistani man with links to Iran has been convicted of plotting to assassinate US President Donald Trump and other American politicians. The purpose of this conspiracy was to avenge the death of Iranian Quds Force commander Qasim Sulemani, who was killed in 2020.
Asif Raza Merchant, 48, was found guilty by a federal jury in a Brooklyn court on Friday of conspiracy to commit murder and attempting to commit a terrorist act across national borders, PTI reported. Merchant may be sentenced to life imprisonment. US Attorney General Pamela Bondi said that Merchant had come to America with a plot to assassinate Trump.
Asif Raza Merchant is a trained member of IRGC
The US Justice Ministry said in a statement that Asif Merchant is a trained member of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) and he admitted during the trial that the IRGC had sent him to the US in 2024 with the intention of carrying out these political assassinations. He said that possible targets included former Trump President Joseph Biden and US Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley. Merchant said he believed Trump was the target.
Arrest made in July 2024
Asif Raza Merchant reached America in April 2024. Here in June he contacted the alleged killers in New York, who were undercover officers of American law enforcement. However, he was arrested before leaving the country in July 2024. US Attorney General Pamela Bondi said, “This individual landed on American soil with the intention of killing President Trump, but instead he was met by the might of American law enforcement.”
Acting Assistant FBI Director James Barnacle said that Asif Reza Merchant conspired to assassinate a leader or government official on American soil at the direction of the Iranian regime.
