Nepal is going through a period of big political and social upheaval these days. Millions of youth and students are on the streets under the Gen Z movement in many cities including the capital Kathmandu. Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli has resigned from his post. Balen Shah has emerged at the center of this movement, who is seen as a very popular leader of the Mayor and youth of Kathmandu.
Time magazine and New York Times also covered Balen. Their social media posts often cause debate and trending at the national level. His lifestyle, style and thoughts have become a role model for the younger generation. This is the reason why Balen Shah’s support in the Gen Z movement is giving it rapid pace and identity.
Career started as a civil engineer
Balen Shah’s visit was also interesting. He started a career as a civil engineer, then became a rapper and eventually stepped into politics. By becoming the mayor of Kathmandu, he gained popularity among the youth and became a hero among traditional parties.

In 2023, he objected to some dialogues of the film ‘Adipurush’ showed that he is not only administrative, but also a leader to raise voice on social issues.
How did Gen Z movement begin?
The GEN Z movement started against Ash and government’s social media restrictions in Nepal. The youth started a peaceful protest, but during the government’s strong response, 19 people were killed and hundreds were injured. 18 protesters died in Kathmandu alone. Balen Shah gave it his leadership by gaining confidence and support of the youth in this entire movement.
