Bhupen Bora: A big upheaval is being seen in the politics of Assam. Former Congress State Chief Bhupen Bora is going to join Bharatiya Janata Party on 22 February 2026. This news is being considered as a big shock in the politics of the state. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said that Bora’s joining BJP is like a homecoming for him. It is being told that along with Bhupen Bora, many of his close leaders and supporters will also join BJP. This may weaken the position of Congress and strengthen BJP before the assembly elections.

Who is Bhupen Bora?

Bhupen Kumar Bora was born on 30 October 1970 in Lakhimpur, Assam. He graduated from North Lakhimpur College and Dibrugarh University. He started his political career from student politics. He was also the Vice President of North Lakhimpur College Students Union and General Secretary of Dibrugarh University Post Graduate Students Union.

While in Congress, Bora worked as the Chief of Assam Pradesh Congress Committee from 2021 to 2024. He was also MLA from Bihpuria assembly constituency from 2006 to 2016. During the time of Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi, he was also the spokesperson and Parliamentary Secretary of the Assam government.

Why did you leave Congress?

On 16 February 2026, Bhupen Bora resigned from Congress. He said that there are problems in taking decisions within the party and internal differences are increasing. Especially during the Majuli visit, he felt the lack of democratic thinking in the party regarding the selection of candidates and allies. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said that a true leader feels sad when his party does not try its best to win. Bora also felt the same and after this it was decided that he would join BJP.
