The Supreme Court of Venezuela ordered Delcy Rodriguez to become the country’s interim president. The Constitutional Chamber of the Supreme Court ordered that the country’s Vice President Delsey Rodriguez will take over as acting President of the country in Maduro’s absence. Maduro was detained by the US Army during an operation on Saturday (January 3) morning.
The Supreme Court’s decision states that Rodriguez will assume the office of President of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela to guarantee administrative continuity and the comprehensive defense of the nation. The judgment also said that the court will consider the matter so that a legal framework can be determined to ensure the continuity of the country, administration of government and protection of sovereignty in the absence of the President.
Who is Delsey Rodriguez?
After the arrest of President Nicolas Maduro during the US military operation in Venezuela, the command of the South American country has come into the hands of Acting Vice President Delsey Rodriguez. There is this provision in the Constitution of Venezuela regarding the absence of the President. Under Articles 233 and 234, in the absence of the President, whether temporary or permanent, the Vice President takes charge.
Let us tell you that Delsey Rodriguez is also the Finance and Oil Minister of Venezuela. Just hours after the arrest of Maduro and his wife Cilia Flores, he chaired a meeting of the National Defense Council along with other ministers and senior officials. During this, Delsey condemned the US military operation and demanded the immediate release of Maduro and his wife.
‘All governments of Latin America should condemn’
Standing in front of the Venezuelan flag, Rodriguez said that this action of America is a gross violation of international law and Venezuelan sovereignty. He said Venezuelans should reject this action and all governments in Latin America should condemn it. He said that we call on the people of the great motherland to remain united, because what has been done to Venezuela can be done to anyone. Force can be used against any country to bend the will of the people.
