The recent violence that broke out on the border between Pakistan and Afghanistan is considered to be the most serious clash between the two neighboring countries. A major reason behind the conflict between these two countries is the presence of notorious terrorist leader Noor Wali Mehsud in Afghanistan, whom Islamabad accuses of leading almost daily attacks in his country.
Although a temporary ceasefire came into effect between the two countries on Wednesday (October 15, 2025), Pakistan’s resentment still remains over the presence of Noor Wali Mehsud in Afghanistan, who is taking shelter there along with his top associates.
Noor Wali Mehsud was targeted in Kabul
Last week, an airstrike in Kabul targeted an armored Toyota Land Cruiser, which Pakistani security officials said was carrying Noor Wali Mehsud. However, terrorists and Pakistani officials believe that he survived the attack. After this the organization released an audio, which is allegedly being said to be of Mehsud.
Pakistan has not officially taken responsibility for this air attack. This attack is considered to be the first airstrike in Kabul after the US targeted Al Qaeda leader Ayman al-Zawahiri in 2022.
Meanwhile, Afghanistan’s Taliban regime has denied allegations of harboring Pakistani terrorists and instead accused Islamabad of harboring a local faction of Islamic State, its main armed rival.
Noor Wali Mehsud took command of TTP in 2018
Noor Wali Mehsud took command of Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) in the year 2018. Before Mehsud, three previous leaders of the organization were killed in American drone strikes. By then, Pakistani Army operations had driven this organization from its bases and pushed it towards Afghanistan.
After taking over the command, Mehsud not only revived the organization but also changed its strategy and united the factions fighting among themselves with diplomatic skills. Mehsud is trained as a religious scholar, who also took command on the ideological front.
