The general budget will be presented on Sunday (1 February). Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman will present the budget for the 9th consecutive time. Sitharaman is the only Finance Minister to present the budget 9 consecutive times during the tenure of the same Prime Minister. The first budget in India was presented during the British rule and it was read by James Wilson, the Finance Minister in the British Government, on 7 April 1860. India’s first Finance Minister after independence, RK Shanmukham Chetty, presented the first budget on 26 November 1947.
Who presented the highest budget
Former Prime Minister Morarji Desai holds the record for presenting the highest number of budgets. He played the role of Finance Minister during the tenure of Prime Ministers Jawaharlal Nehru and Lal Bahadur Shastri and presented a total of 10 budgets.
How many budgets did former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh present?
The name of late former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh is also included among those who have presented the country’s general budget the maximum number of times as the Finance Minister of India, who has 5 budgets to his name. While being the Finance Minister, he had presented 5 consecutive budgets between 1991 and 1995 in the PV Narasimha Rao government.
P Chidambaram presented the budget 9 times
Former Finance Minister P Chidambaram presented the budget 9 times. His first budget was presented on 19 March 1996 by Prime Minister H.D. It was in the Deve Gowda government and the second budget was also presented in the same United Front government. P Chidambaram presented 5 budgets between 2004 and 2008. After this, in 2009, he once again became the Finance Minister in the Congress-led UPA government. He also presented the general budget in 2013 and 2014.
Pranab Mukherjee’s record
Former President Pranab Mukherjee gave 8 budget speeches during his tenure as Finance Minister. He had first presented the budget three times in 1982, 1983 and 1984 and then presented five consecutive budgets between February 2009 and March 2012 during the Congress-led UPA government. Apart from her, the current Finance Minister Nirmala Sitaman is also the woman Finance Minister of India since 2019 and till now has presented a total of 8 budgets including an interim budget. As Finance Minister, Nirmala Sitaman will present the ninth consecutive budget in 2026.
