On August 1, the 71st National Film Awards were announced in which ‘The Kerala Story’ was awarded two awards. Sudipto Sen won the Best Direction Award for ‘The Kerala Story’ and Prashantu Mahapatra won the Best Cinematography Award. ‘The Kerala Story’ became a controversial release due to its subject. Many people condemned the film, calling it propoganda and also criticized it for incorrectly presenting the facts and giving it a communal color to Kerala. Two National Awards received by “The Kerala Story” surprised some people, while Jury President Ashutosh Gowariker explained why the film won the award.

Actually, the chairman of the jury Ashutosh Gowariker told during an interview to NDTV,
- “One award is of cinematography. The cinematography of” The Kerala Story “was very Stark and realistic.”
- He further said, “It never tried to dominate the Nent, the images were composed in the reality. Therefore, we appreciated it.”
- Regarding the award received by Sudipto Sen, Gowariker said, “This is a difficult subject and to express it with clericity, we felt the need to appreciate it as a jury.”
- Gowariker said that the jury had an ‘discussion’ about “The Kerala Story”, but the film was unanimously awarded the award.
