It is often said that death in sleep is the most peaceful way. But medical science suggests that it is often a sign of serious health problems. According to doctors, sudden death during sleep is mostly caused by diseases related to heart, langs or brain. Let us tell you how this happens and what things are responsible behind it.
Why comes a sudden heart attack
Cardiologists say that the biggest cause of sleep in sleep is Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA). In this, the heart suddenly stops beating. This problem is especially associated with coronary artery disease, irregular beats and heart valve designs. Dr. Pramod Kumar (Cardiologist, Delhi) says, “If heart disease is detected in time and patients are regularly examined, then the risk of death from heart failure in sleep can be reduced to a great extent.”
Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is a serious sleep-related disorder, in which the breath moves intermittently at bedtime. This reduces oxygen levels in the body and increases the pressure on the heart. This can cause heart attack, stroke and sudden death. Dr. Madhumala says, “CPAP therapy, weight control and alcohol and smoking are helpful in improving the quality of sleep and reducing the dangers of OSA.”
Diabetes
In patients with type 1 diabetes, sudden death can occur due to low blood sugar (hypoglycemia) at night. This is called “dead in bed syndrome”. Endocrinologists recommend that patients should check sugar level before bedtime and insulin dose should be taken according to the doctor’s guideline.
APLISP and Soodep
In epilepsy patients, there is a risk of Sudden Unexpected Death in Epilepsy (SUDEP), which often occurs during sleep.
According to neurologist, taking medicines on time, using Caesar Monitoring device and regular consultation with a doctor reduces the risk of sudep to a great extent.
Stroke and other problems
High BP, blockage or brain enuram can cause stroke at night. Dr. Sanjay Verma (Neurologist) says, “Keeping control of high BP, taking care of cholesterol and regular health checkup is the safest way to avoid stroke.”
Religion problem
COPD, severe asthma or lung infections can cause breathing during sleep. Such patients are advised to prevent regular medicine, inhaler and pollution.
What is responsible
- Smoking
- Overcrowded
- obesity
- Unreserved sleep
All these factors increase the risk of heart and lung diseases and make the possibility of death in sleep manifold.
Death in sleep may be considered peaceful, but it often indicates serious and hidden diseases. Conditions like heart disease, sleep apnea, diabetes, stroke and epilepsy are the major reasons behind this. Doctors recommend that these dangers can be avoided to a great extent by checking timely investigation, adherence to medicines and adopting healthy lifestyle.
