Around 5.4 million people are bitten by snakes every year around the world, of which 1.8 to 2.7 million are bites by venomous snakes. Due to this, more than 81,000 people die every year. According to the report of the World Health Organization, more than 12 lakh deaths occurred due to snake bites in India between 2019 and 20. The people most affected by this are farmers and children of rural areas. In such a situation, let us tell you today why a person dies due to snake bite and in how many ways its poison affects.
How does snake venom work?
There are more than 3000 species of snakes found around the world, but only 600 of these species are poisonous. At the same time, the poison of every snake affects differently. But most of the poisons are of three types, which include neurotoxic, cytotoxic and myotoxic.
neurotoxic poison
This poison affects the human nervous system. It is commonly found in snakes like cobra, karait and mamba. Neurotoxic poison damages the electrical signals of the nerves of the body, due to which the muscles stop contracting. Its effect is that the person’s eyelids start falling, there is difficulty in speaking and gradually there is difficulty in breathing. If it does not get timely treatment, the person dies.
Cytotoxic poison
This poison damages the cells of the body. This poison is found in snakes like vipers. It destroys the clotting elements present in the blood, which causes swelling, blisters and leakage of blood from various places in the body. Many times, due to the effect of this poison, some part of the body starts rotting, which later has to be amputated.
maya toxin poison
This poison is found in certain species like rattlesnakes. It directly affects the muscles and disrupts the flow of charged molecules present in them. Due to this, the muscles become weak and stop working, due to which the person gradually becomes a victim of paralysis.
What happens to the body after a snake bite?
If a snake bites you, there is severe pain and swelling at the site of the thorn. After this, the poison slowly starts mixing in the blood and spreading throughout the body, due to which important organs like heart, lungs, brain and kidneys start getting affected. Experts advise that if you are bitten by a snake, go to the hospital immediately. Avoid tightly binding the snake bite area, this can stop blood circulation. Apart from this, do not try to suck the snake’s poison, this can further spread the infection.
