What is white coat hypertension?

Experts say that when a person’s blood pressure remains normal at home, but increases at the time of examination at the doctor or hospital, then this condition is called white coat hypertension. According to the doctor, the hospital environment, doctors wearing white coats, medical machines and the worry of examination, all these things unknowingly put the person under stress. Due to this stress, blood pressure increases for some time.

Why does blood pressure increase as soon as you go to the hospital?

People are often nervous while going to the hospital. Some fear the disease, others worry about bad reports, many times people rush to the hospital, climb stairs or wait for a long time. All these things can temporarily increase blood pressure. Apart from this, lack of sleep, getting tested after drinking tea or coffee, talking during the test, smoking, mental stress or restlessness can also cause increase in blood pressure.

According to doctors, when we are under stress, certain hormones are released in the body. These hormones speed up the heartbeat and compress the blood vessels. This has a direct effect on blood pressure and it increases suddenly. He says that fear of examination, anxiety about meeting a doctor or any bad medical memory from the past, all these increase stress and the blood pressure goes up for some time.

Is white coat hypertension dangerous?

Doctors say that high blood pressure coming to the hospital every time is not always dangerous, but it should not be ignored either. In some people, this can progress to true high blood pressure, which can damage the heart, kidneys, brain and eyes. However, if the tests and reports are understood properly, taking unnecessary medicines can be avoided.

What should you do?

Check regularly with digital BP machine at home, sit quietly for at least 5 minutes before measuring BP. Avoid tea, coffee, cigarettes or exercise 30 minutes before the test. Write daily readings in a diary. Show all readings measured at home to the doctor. In some cases, doctors may also recommend 24-hour ambulatory blood pressure monitoring, so that the accurate average blood pressure throughout the day can be known.
