Often people start vomiting while traveling long by car, bus or train. This is usually called “motion sickness”. This problem can happen to anyone from children to elders. Many people ignore it as a small problem, but during the journey, this experience makes it very uncomfortable. Let us know why the vomiting comes while doing who comes and what is the way to avoid it.
Why does vomiting come?
According to medical reports, when we travel in a car or a vehicle, there is a conflict in the information sent by our eyes and the information sent by our eyes.
- Eyes see that the body is stable (because we are sitting on the seat of the car).
- But ears and mind feel that the body is shaking (due to car speed and shaking).
The brain is unable to process this contradictory message and it affects our nervous system. The result of this is that problems like nausea, head border and vomiting begin.
Who has more problems?
- Children and women
- People suffering from migraine
- Long traveler
- Whose balance system is weak
What does research say?
Motion sickness means vomiting, dizziness or nausea is a very common problem. According to a report by Medlineplus Genetics under the National Library of Medicine, almost 1 out of every 3 persons (about 30 percent of people) are victims of motion sickness. That is, if 10 people are traveling by car or bus together, then 3 of them can have this problem. This figure suggests that motion sickness is not a rare problem but a very common situation, on which scientists are continuously doing research. Experts believe that this problem occurs when our brain does not match the signals coming from the eyes and ears. For example, when we are sitting on the seat of the car, the eyes see a stable view but the vestibular system inside the ear feels the body in motion. This conflict becomes the cause of motion sickness.
Essential things
- Research also revealed that this problem grows rapidly in those who travel mobile or book.
- At the same time, the chances of motion sickness in passengers looking out of the window are reduced by 40 percent.
A panacea to avoid this
- See out of the window: This gives the same message to both eyes and ears.
- Avoid reading mobile and book: During the journey, the possibility of vomiting increases.
- Eat light and low oily food: Do not eat heavy food before the journey.
- Eat ginger: Many research has found that ginger helps in reducing vomiting and nausea.
- Take a deep breath and relax: If the brain and nervous system remains calm then the problem of vomiting will be less.
- Take medicine if needed: Anti-motion sickness medicine can be taken with the advice of a doctor.
What do doctors say?
Dr. Rakesh Tandon, a gastroenterologist from AIIMS Delhi, says, “Motion sickness is a common problem and there is no need to panic. If it is increasing too much or is vomiting every time, then the patient should meet a doctor. Sometimes this problem can also be caused by Inner Ear Infection or any other medical condition.”
That is, vomiting during the journey is a normal reaction of the body, but by taking some care and adopting the right measures, it can be easily avoided.
