The US Department of Defense (Pentagon) has ordered about 1,500 active duty soldiers stationed in Alaska to be ready for possible deployment in Minnesota. In fact, massive protests are taking place in Minnesota against the government’s deportation drive. In such a situation, the administration of President Donald Trump is deploying the army in his own state.
Quoting US officials, Reuters reported on Sunday (January 18, 2026) that the army has instructed to be ready to deploy these units, so that they can be sent immediately in case the situation turns violent in the Midwestern state. However, it is not clear whether any troops will actually be sent.
US President had threatened state officials
At the same time, US President Donald Trump had warned on Thursday (January 15, 2026) that if state officials do not stop protesters from targeting immigration officials, then he can deploy military forces under the Insurrection Act. This threat was given after the increase in the number of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents.
However, if troops are deployed, it is not clear whether the Trump administration will formally invoke the Insurrection Act. Even without invoking this law, the President can deploy active duty forces for certain domestic purposes. Trump had cited the same argument for sending Marine troops to Los Angeles last year.
Threat of soldiers after increase in immigration agents
President Donald Trump wrote on his social media platform Truth Social, ‘If Minnesota’s corrupt politicians do not follow the law and do not stop professional rioters and insurrectionists from attacking patriotic ICE officers who are just doing their jobs, I will invoke the Insurrection Act.’
