We do many such tasks in everyday life, about which we never think seriously, using toilet is also one of those tasks. We go to the bathroom, finish the job, press flush and walk out without looking back. Hearing the loud sound of the flush, we feel that all the dirt has been washed away, everything has been cleaned and now there is no danger there. But does this really happen?
A recent new research has completely changed this common thinking. According to this research, flushing the toilet can spread more dirt and germs into the air than we realize. This is why experts are now advising to close the toilet lid before flushing. So let us know why the toilet lid should be closed before flushing.
What does the new research say?
A study published in the American Journal of Infection Control tried to find out what happens inside the bathroom when the toilet is flushed. During the research, it was observed how small germ particles spread in the air when the lid is open and when flushed when the lid is closed. Research has revealed that as soon as we flush, very fine and invisible droplets fly upward into the air. These droplets are so small that we cannot see them, but bacteria and germs may be present in them. These particles can settle on the toilet seat, walls, floor, wash basin and even on toothbrushes and towels kept nearby. The most surprising thing was that even when the lid is closed, some particles still come out.
Why do germs come out even after the lid is closed?
Now the question in your mind will be that if the lid is closed, then how do the germs come out. The reason for this is very simple. As toilets are not completely airtight, there is a little space between the lid and the seat. When flushed, the strong pressure of water pushes air upward. With this, very small particles come out of that empty space. This doesn’t mean that closing the lid is useless, but it does mean that the flushing process may be messier than we think.
Why should you close the toilet lid before flushing?
The toilet lid should be closed before flushing, even though the lid may not stop every germ, closing it is still a very beneficial step. Due to the lid being closed, big splashes do not come out directly and stay there. In most homes, toothbrush, soap, towels and other items are kept near the toilet. By closing the lid, less dirt falls on them. The moisture and odor emanating from the flush avoids spreading throughout the bathroom. If fewer germs spread, the risk of infection and diseases will also be reduced.
Important hygiene habits
If you really want to keep your bathroom clean and safe, just closing the lid is not enough. Along with this, it is important to adopt some other good habits also. Clean the toilet seat, flush button, handle and surrounding surfaces thoroughly. It is very important to have a window or exhaust fan in the bathroom, so that proper flow of air is maintained. Also try to keep toothbrushes and towels at a distance from the toilet or keep them covered.
