This video quickly went viral and caught the attention of millions of people and then America’s renowned gastroenterologist and gut health expert Dr. Palaniappan Manickam gave his opinion on this home remedy. Cumin and celery are often thought of as mere spices in Indian kitchens, but both Ayurveda and now modern science believe that these tiny seeds actually hold great power. According to Dr. Pal, taking these two spices with hot water in the morning can be beneficial in many ways. In such a situation, let us know why like Malaika Arora, you too should drink cumin-celery water every morning.
Why should one drink cumin-celery water every morning?
1. For digestive system – After overnight fasting, it is important to activate our digestive system gradually. An enzyme called thymol present in cumin increases the production of digestive juices in the stomach, which makes it easier to digest food. At the same time, celery has carminative properties, which means it provides relief from problems like gas, flatulence and swelling. By drinking it in the morning the stomach gradually becomes active and gets ready for the day’s food.
2. Beneficial in reducing weight – Dr. Pal cites a human study in which taking cumin was found to reduce the body fat percentage of some overweight people. Cumin helps in boosting body metabolism and fat breakdown. Whereas celery reduces water retention and improves the absorption of nutrients. Together they create a mixture that can help in weight loss slowly but effectively.
3. Beneficial in detox – Nowadays, there are many types of detox drinks available in the market which claim to cleanse the body in an instant. But cumin-celery water works to clean the intestines without any process. By soaking them overnight, the essential oils and antioxidants of their seeds get absorbed into the water. These elements soothe the lining of the intestine and help in the gradual elimination of metabolic waste.
4. Helpful in balancing blood sugar – If you want to maintain a balanced energy level throughout the day, then it is good to start the morning with a drink that balances blood sugar. Some studies of cumin and fennel have shown that they can reduce post meal blood sugar spikes and improve insulin sensitivity.
