It is said to get an injection of tetanus immediately in case of injury to anything of iron. Have you ever wondered what is the reason behind it? Actually, tetanus can prove to be a very serious and fatal disease if not undergoing treatment. Thousands of tetanus cases are reported every year in India only. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), every year about 30 thousand people die due to tetanus all over the world. Let us know why it is necessary to get tetanus injection in case of injury to iron. What is this disease and how can its danger be avoided?

What a dangerous disease is tetanus?

Tetanus is a disease caused by very severe bacteria, caused by bacteria called Clostridium Tetani. This bacteria is found in soil, dust, dung and rusty metals. When something of iron gets hurt, this bacterial enters the body through the wound. It then produces neurotoxin (tetanospasmin), which has a poor effect on the nervous system. This toxin causes muscle stiffness and cramps, which are called ‘locks’ or jaw fasting. In this disease, there are difficulty in breathing and tour. In many cases, death occurs.

How are symptoms of tetanus?

Symptoms of tetanus start appearing in three to 21 days of injury. However, in most cases these symptoms start appearing in seven to 10 days. The most common symptom of tetanus is to fasten the jaw, which causes difficulty in opening the mouth. This condition is called Locks. Apart from this, shoulder-neck, back and abdominal muscle cramps are also a symptom of tetanus. At the same time, there is also difficulty in breathing due to stiffness in the muscles. During this time, the body temperature rises very fast and sweat comes very high. Due to tetanus, the toxin heart system made in the body can also be affected.

Why is it necessary to injure tetanus?

According to Dr. Anil Mehta, a infectious pathologist at Fortis Hospital in Jaipur, tetanus toxioid or tetanus immune globulin is imposed after injury to iron cheese, so that the disease can be avoided. This injection works in two ways. The first injection is of the tetanus toxoid vaccine, which makes the body fight to tetanus toxin. If you already have a vaccine of tetanus, then booster dose is given after injury. This booster dose increases antibodies in the body, which neutralizes the toxin of tetanus bacteria. In India, DPT (diphtheria, pertusis, tetanus) vaccines are given to protect children from tetanus. These vaccines are given as a booster dose at 6 weeks, 10 weeks, 14 weeks and then 5 years of age after the child’s birth.

The second injection tetanus is of immune globulin (TIG). If you do not have a vaccine of tetanus or your vaccination history is not clear, then doctors can give tetanus immune globulin (TIG). This causes antibodies to form immediately, which makes tetanus toxin inactive. This injection is applied in case of severe or dirty lesions.
