Delhi government is preparing to provide big relief to women of economically weaker section (EWS) on the occasion of Holi. According to sources, the government may provide free LPG cylinders to women of EWS families on the occasion of Holi festival in March. An important proposal in this regard has been approved in the Delhi Cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on Tuesday (January 20) morning.
The outline of this scheme was discussed in detail in the cabinet meeting and in-principle approval has been given to implement it. Under the scheme, women from EWS families holding ration cards will be given free gas cylinders during Holi and Diwali. The government believes that this will provide direct relief to poor families in times of inflation.
The plan has been a part of the election promise
It is noteworthy that Bharatiya Janata Party had promised to provide free LPG cylinders to EWS families on the occasion of Holi and Diwali in its manifesto for Delhi Assembly elections.
Apart from this, a promise was also included to provide gas to economically weaker families at a concessional rate of Rs 500 per cylinder throughout the year. After coming to power, the government included this scheme among the priority projects of its first 100 days.
It will cost the government about Rs 300 crore
According to sources, the government is expected to spend approximately Rs 300 crore on implementing this scheme. Officials say that the beneficiaries will be identified on the basis of ration cards, so that the benefits of the scheme reach the right people and there are no irregularities.
The BJP government has already fulfilled some of its election promises after coming to power. These include the implementation of the Centre’s Ayushman Bharat health insurance scheme in Delhi and opening of Atal Canteen to provide food to the needy at just Rs 5. The government says that the free gas cylinder scheme is also a part of this series.
Good news may be received before Holi
If everything goes according to plan, then before Holi, women from EWS families can get the gift of free gas cylinders. This will reduce the expenses of poor families on festival occasions and it will become a little easier to manage the kitchen budget.
