There was chaos across the country after the government announced the demonetization of Rs 500 and Rs 1000 notes on 8 November 2016. During this time, long queues of people were seen outside banks and ATMs so that they could exchange the notes with them. Even today its memories are fresh in people’s minds. Meanwhile, discussions regarding demonetization are once again in full swing.
These days, a viral post on social media is claiming that the government may ban Rs 500 notes from March 2026. Due to this, Rs 500 notes will also stop being dispensed from ATMs. After this viral post, questions have started rising in people’s minds whether Rs 500 notes will really go out of circulation? People are beginning to think that the government will once again demonetize Rs 500 notes.
What is the truth?
Press Information Bureau (PIB) has rejected the claims going on on social media that the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) will discontinue the currency of Rs 500 by March 2026 and termed these reports as false and misleading. This means that it is clear that the government is not preparing for any kind of demonetization. Commenting on this on social media, PIB’s fact-checking unit said that the Reserve Bank has not made any announcement regarding demonetization of Rs 500 notes. RBI’s claim of stopping the circulation of Rs 500 notes by March 2026 is wrong. That means Rs 500 notes are completely valid and will remain in circulation. The government currently has no plans to close it.
