Trade deal has been announced between India and America. Donald Trump has also removed the 25 percent tariff imposed as a penalty on the purchase of Russian oil. However, when Union Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal was asked whether India will continue purchasing oil from Russia or not, he said that the Ministry of External Affairs will provide information in this regard. He said how is the Minister claiming that the trade agreement is independent of the decision to purchase oil? The UBT MP further wrote, ‘Minister, these are not matters of two separate ministries, but are directly linked to each other – the trade agreement is based on the assurance that we will be told where to buy oil and where not to buy it.’
Taking aim at the Commerce Minister, Priyanka Chaturvedi wrote, ‘These arrogant replies reinforce the fact that we allowed America to influence our national interests for our benefit and we bowed down.’
What did MEA say about Russian oil?
Regarding the purchase of Russian oil, the Foreign Ministry said that ensuring energy security of 140 crore Indians is the biggest priority of our government. MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said that we diversify energy purchases according to market conditions and changing international circumstances.
MEA said, ‘We can buy oil from any country in the world as per our requirement and its decision will be taken in the national interest. All decisions of India have been and will be taken keeping this in mind.
What did MEA say on purchasing oil from Venezuela?
Regarding buying oil from Venezuela, Jaiswal said that Venezuela has been our long-time partner in the fields of energy, trade and investment. He said, ‘We were importing energy and crude oil from Venezuela till 2019-20, after which we had to stop it. Then we started buying oil from Venezuela in 2023-24, but we had to stop it after the sanctions were reimposed.
