India has given a big statement regarding the extradition of former Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. In this he has said that he is looking into the request to extradite the former Prime Minister of Bangladesh. He is committed to ensuring the best interests of the people of that country. In fact, 78-year-old Sheikh Hasina was sentenced to death in her absence by a special tribunal in Dhaka last week for crimes against humanity. He is blamed for his government’s brutal crackdown on last year’s student-led protests.
Last left Bangladesh and came to India
Awami League leader Hasina had left Bangladesh and come to India on August 5 after large-scale protests last year. Hasina’s aide and former home minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal was also sentenced to death on similar charges. After the court’s decision, Bangladesh sent a letter to India demanding his extradition.
External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said, ‘This request is being considered under judicial and internal legal processes.’
He said, ‘We are committed to the best interests of the people of Bangladesh, including peace, democracy, inclusivity and stability. We will continue to communicate constructively with all stakeholders in this regard.
Bangladesh has demanded extradition
Following the verdict against Hasina, Bangladesh’s Foreign Ministry demanded that India immediately hand her over to Dhaka under the extradition treaty in view of her conviction. The ministry said, ‘As per the existing extradition treaty between the two countries, this is also India’s responsibility.’
What did Hasina say?
Hasina said the verdict was given by an ‘extrajudicial tribunal, established and presided over by an unelected government which has no democratic mandate.’
The decision came a few months before the parliamentary elections
This decision against the former Prime Minister has come a few months before the parliamentary elections in Bangladesh. Hasina’s Awami League party has been barred from participating in the elections to be held in February. According to India’s initial assessment, the process of sentencing Hasina to death was believed to have several flaws, including the ‘unconstitutional’ appointment of judges. Jaiswal also said that India is closely monitoring all the developments in Bangladesh.
On a question regarding Bangladesh’s National Security Advisor Khalilur Rahman inviting his Indian counterpart Ajit Doval to visit Bangladesh, the Foreign Ministry spokesperson said that it will be considered when the time comes. Rahman had come to New Delhi last week to attend a security conference. He also held a bilateral meeting with Doval.
