Will not 500 rupee notes be removed from ATM after 30 September? Government gave this answer

Government on 500 Rupees Notes: It was claimed in many media reports that 500 rupee notes would stop coming out of the ATM. The Finance Ministry has given clarification on this. On behalf of the government, it was said in Parliament that keeping in mind the needs of public transactions, the RBI will ensure that the number of notes of all value class is balanced.

RBI instructions to banks:

To ensure easily access to small value notes, RBI has directed all banks and white label ATM operators to ensure the number of 100 and 200 rupee notes by 75 percent by 30 September 2025, and increase their number by 90 percent by 31 March 2026.

Are 500 rupee notes being closed?

The government aims to stop the 500 rupee notes, but to increase the availability of low price class notes. In response to a question in Parliament, the government clarified that there is no basis for the 500 rupee notes and concerns about their release from ATM.

Why this step was taken?

During the Rajya Sabha session, on 5 August 2025, members of the Upper House. Venkat Subba Reddy and Milind Deora raised this question. It is worth noting that earlier also the RBI had instructed banks to ensure the availability of low value notes in ATMs so that the general public does not have any problem in daily transactions. Whenever people get upset in financial matters, instructions have been given to banks from time to time. But, due to fake reports many times, there is doubt among the people that the government is not closing the high value note.
