Will the supply of crude oil from Russia increase again? What will be India’s next step if Strait of Hormuz is closed?

Due to the war that has broken out between Israel and Iran, India’s biggest fear is the supply of crude oil. The Iranian Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC) announced the closure of the Strait of Hormuz on Saturday (March 28, 2026). Strait of Hormuz is an important corridor of India’s oil and gas trade with Arab countries, from where 22 percent of crude oil is supplied, but now due to its closure this supply may also stop.

According to the report of The Indian Express, experts in the matter have said that the government and oil companies are considering buying more oil from Russia. In this crisis situation, the government and oil companies are working on a contingency strategy. If the supply of oil from Gulf countries stops due to tensions in Western Asia, then India can again increase the purchase of crude oil from Russia. The oil coming from Russia is also not dependent on the route through the Strait of Hormuz.

What else can India do if the Strait of Hormuz is closed?
As US President Donald Trump has said that this war can drag on for four weeks, in such a situation India may face a big problem regarding crude oil. At such a time, the Indian government can also take strict steps like banning the export of petrol and diesel to protect domestic consumption. At present India exports one-third of petrol and one-fourth of diesel.

In a few months, India has reduced the purchase of oil from Russia due to trade talks with America. America had imposed 25 percent additional tariff on India as penalty for purchasing Russian oil. However, only last month Donald Trump had announced to reduce the tariff on Indian goods from 50 percent to 18 percent.

How much oil does India buy from Russia?
According to commodity market analytics firm Kpler, India bought 1.1 million barrels per day of oil from Russia in February, while in 2025 this figure was 2 million barrels per day. At the same time, the average loading of Russian crude oil at Indian ports last year was 1.7 million barrels per day, which has come down to only 0.7 million barrels per day this year.

What is the Strait of Hormuz?
There is a narrow waterway between Iran and Oman, which is called the Strait of Hormuz. It connects the Persian Gulf to the Gulf of Oman and the Arabian Sea, which is considered the most important oil transit route globally. Not only Iran, oil and gas is supplied to India from Saudi Arabia to Qatar and Kuwait through this route.
