After conducting military operations in Venezuela in the beginning of 2026, Donald Trump is now threatening another Latin American country. The US President has threatened a land strike on the drug cartels of its neighboring country Mexico. Trump said that drug cartels are running Mexico, so America will have to do something. However, Trump has threatened not only Mexico but also Colombia and Cuba.
Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum has called Trump’s statement a violation of Mexico’s sovereignty. Let us tell you that Trump’s threat is discussed in many posts on X, in which it has been said that there is a possibility of an attack on Mexico.
Mexico’s armed forces are primarily responsible for national security, combating drug cartels, and responding to natural disasters. According to the Global Firepower Index 2025, Mexico’s Army ranks 32nd in the world.
How powerful is the Mexican Army?
There are approximately 4.12 lakh active soldiers in the Mexican Army, which also includes the Army, Air Force and Navy. There are about 2.61 lakh soldiers in the army. The annual budget of Mexico’s army is about 10 billion dollars, which is very less compared to America.
The Mexican Army has a limited number of tanks. There are about 100-200 armored vehicles and fighter planes. The army’s focus remains more on domestic security rather than a major war. The army faces difficulties in fighting drug cartels due to resources. Mexico’s army is a regional army and is not capable of fighting with the rest of the world.
Why does Trump want to attack?
Mexican cartels smuggle fentanyl into the US, causing the deaths of thousands of Americans every year. Trump says that the Mexican government is not able to stop the cartels. Apart from this, Trump considers these drug cartels as terrorist organizations and hence he wants to take military action to eliminate them.
