The demand for dividing Uttar Pradesh has arisen once again. In the last few months, leaders of Bharatiya Janata Party in Western UP have advocated dividing the state and now this voice has been raised from Amethi also. During the Khichdi banquet and affection meeting program organized at Dadan Sadan in the district on Wednesday, 21 January 2026, the demand for formation of a separate Purvanchal state once again came forward vocally. In the program, former Union Minister Dr. Sanjay Singh and former Technical Education Minister Dr. Ameeta Singh said in clear words from the stage that the development of Purvanchal is possible only when it gets the status of a separate state. Thousands of people from the area were present on this occasion.
Speaking to ABP News, former Union Minister and Bharatiya Janata Party’s Dr. Sanjay Singh said that Uttar Pradesh is the most populous state in the country, where it has become difficult to establish good governance under a single administrative structure. He said that in a state with a greater population than the fifth largest country in the world, both development and democracy are affected. Dr. Singh said that now the time has come that a separate state should be formed for the development, employment and better administration of the people of Purvanchal.
Dr. Sanjay Singh said that 28 districts of 8 divisions of Uttar Pradesh will be included in the proposed Purvanchal state. These will include Varanasi, Chandauli, Jaunpur, Ghazipur, Azamgarh, Mau, Ballia, Prayagraj, Kaushambi, Pratapgarh, Mirzapur, Sonbhadra, Bhadohi, Ayodhya, Akbarpur, Sultanpur, Amethi, Gonda, Balrampur, Bahraich, Shravasti, Gorakhpur, Maharajganj, Deoria, Kushinagar, Basti, Siddharthnagar and Sant Kabir Nagar. He told that with a population of about 7 crore 98 lakh, this state will be the 14th largest state in the country. Not only this, this state will come into existence before the upcoming elections of 2027.
The campaign will run from the joint resolution platform
Dr. Sanjay Singh announced that the demand for state formation will be taken forward in an organized and effective manner through ‘Purvanchal State Joint Resolution Forum’. He called upon all the social, political organizations and fighters fighting for the demand of Purvanchal state to unite, so that this issue can be placed firmly on the national platform.
Talking exclusively to ABP News, former minister and BJP leader Dr. Ameeta Singh said that Purvanchal has a distinct linguistic and cultural identity, yet this region has been a victim of administrative neglect for a long time. He said that despite being rich in natural resources, fertile land and skilled human resources, Purvanchal has lagged behind socially and economically.
Need for special policy on agriculture, industry and education- Ameeta
Dr. Ameeta Singh said that due to lack of agricultural reforms and industrial development, mass migration is taking place from Purvanchal. Due to lack of concrete policy for water management of rivers coming from Nepal, every year one has to face the problem of both flood and drought. He said that there is a huge lack of better health services, higher education institutions and modern infrastructure in the region, which can be effectively addressed only by becoming a separate state.
Dr. Ameeta Singh said that Purvanchal is a big power generation center of the country. Districts like Mirzapur and Sonbhadra are rich in mineral resources. Religious centers like Ayodhya, Kashi and Prayagraj, as well as Buddhist tourist places like Sarnath, Kushinagar, Shravasti and Kapilvastu can make Purvanchal a major center for earning foreign exchange.
‘Give us Purvanchal state, we can make India Japan’
Dr. Ameeta Singh made an emotional appeal and said, “The people of Purvanchal are hoisting the flag of their hard work in Mumbai, Surat, Ludhiana, Singapore, Dubai, Mauritius and Silicon Valley. Give us Purvanchal state, we have the power, capability and determination to make India Japan.”
The demand for Purvanchal state has got a new edge through the program. The leaders clearly indicated that in the coming time, this movement will take a broader form and with solidarity it will be made a national issue. In this program, former district president of Bharatiya Janata Party Ramprasad Mishra and advocate Umashankar Pandey, former BJP MLA Tejbhan Singh, BJP MLC Shailendra Pratap Singh, BJP leader Chandra Prakash Mishra ‘Matiyari’ and RSS district pracharak Pawan ji and many leaders and people of the area were present.
CM Yogi has opposed the demand for partition
Now it has to be seen whether this demand will increase the problems of BJP. Let us tell you that whenever there has been talk of dividing the state, BJP leaders have opposed it.
CM Yogi Adityanath himself has rejected these demands. In an interview, CM Yogi had almost rejected the then Bahujan Samaj Party’s demand for policies on division of the state and said that CM Yogi Adityanath said that Uttar Pradesh is a state with a unique identity in itself and has immense potential. He believes that Uttar Pradesh should achieve its development and goals only by remaining united. He said that the real strength, identity and respect of the state lies in unity.
