A big political development is being seen in Assam before the assembly elections. Congress and Raijor Dal formally signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) on Tuesday, finalizing the electoral alliance. This agreement was announced in a joint press conference held in Jorhat.
With the signing of this agreement, both the parties have decided to contest the elections unitedly against the ruling BJP. This alliance is being seen as a strategic move to consolidate anti-BJP votes and strengthen opposition unity across Assam.
Raijor Dal President Akhil Gogoi described this development as a long-awaited alliance. He said that now both the parties will together fight BJP in the elections. Gogoi revealed that as per the seat sharing agreement, Congress has left many important constituencies for the ruling party.
What did the President of Raijor Dal say?
He said, “From today onwards Raijor Dal will work towards preparing Gaurav Gogoi for the post of Chief Minister.” Emphasizing the importance of opposition unity, Akhil Gogoi described Congress as the oldest political party in Assam and said that this alliance has been formed with a view to defeat BJP. He further informed that 6 parties including Assam Jatiya Parishad (AJP) have already joined hands with Congress.
Gogoi said that his primary goal is to defeat BJP. He appealed to the voters, especially the voters of Jorhat, to support Gaurav Gogoi as the chief ministerial candidate. He also urged the voters of Jorhat and Mariani constituencies to support Congress candidate Pallabi Gogoi and Raijor Dal’s Dr Gyanashree Bora.
Gogoi further said that Raijor Dal will contest elections only on 13 seats, in which the possibility of victory and the goal of defeating BJP will be given priority. He also expressed regret for those party candidates who could not get seats due to the alliance system.
What did Gaurav Gogoi say
Assam Congress President Gaurav Gogoi said, “We could not live up to everyone’s expectations, but their sacrifices will be respected and remembered.” Gogoi appealed to party workers to remain united and work together to ensure victory. He also appealed to the people of Assam to unite to defeat the ruling BJP.
As per the agreement, the alliance will contest elections in several important constituencies including Sivasagar, Mariani, Dalgaon, Dhing, Sadiya, Digboi, Bokakhat, Naharkatiya, Koliabar, Tezpur, Margherita, Goalpara East and Gauripur.
