
When cold and moist air hits the skin, small blood vessels near the surface of the hands and feet shrink. To save heat, the body sends blood towards the internal organs, due to which problems start in the external parts.

The problem increases when one suddenly comes from cold to hot environment. When exposed to extreme heat or hot water, blood vessels expand rapidly, causing fluid to accumulate in the surrounding tissue and cause swelling, burning and itching.
