On Sunday, the Indian women’s cricket team won its first World Cup title by defeating South Africa. The team reached the World Cup final for the first time in 2005, when Australia became the champion. Mithali Raj was the captain of India in that World Cup, but do you know that at that time there were neither match fees for the players nor did they get any huge amount under the central contract from BCCI.
Talking about today, BCCI gives equal salary to its male and female cricketers. Each player gets Rs 15 lakh for playing a test match. One gets Rs 6 lakh for an ODI and Rs 3 lakh per match for a T20. This is the match fee of both male and female players. Apart from this, BCCI includes players in different categories under the central contract and also pays their annual salary according to the category.
However, there is a difference between male and female cricketers in the central contract. Like the top grade in men’s cricket is A+, it includes 4 players including Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma. Players in this category get Rs 7 crore per year. Whereas the top grade among women cricketers is ‘A’, in which the player gets Rs 50 lakh per year. Harmanpreet Kaur is in A grade.
How much money was paid in the 2005 World Cup?
Under the captaincy of Mithali Raj, the Indian women’s cricket team reached the World Cup final for the first time in 2005. Australia had scored 215 runs while batting first, in reply Team India was bundled out for 117 runs. During that time, there were neither match fees nor any contracts for Indian women players. The players of Team India, which were runner-up, received Rs 1000.
