Sitting Posture While Working From Home: Work from home is no longer an exception but has become a part of everyday life. What once started as a temporary solution has now become a permanent office for many people. No hassles of traffic, no time restrictions and the freedom to work from the comfort of home, all this sounds as simple as it is attractive. But amidst this comfort, a habit is developing which people are not paying attention to, the wrong way of working from home.

It has now become common to work on a laptop while sitting on the sofa, bed, dining table or floor. Keeping your neck bent for hours while looking at mobile, working with laptop in your lap or attending a meeting in a half lying position may seem comfortable in the beginning, but the body keeps tolerating it silently, the effect is visible gradually.

What do experts say?

Senior spine surgeon Dr Naveen Pandita told TOI that work from home is not a problem in itself, but wrong posture and bad sitting habits are damaging the spine. According to him, now more people than before are reaching the hospital complaining of neck and back pain.

The real problem is that home furniture is not made for office. Dining chairs are not meant for sitting for long periods of time, beds do not provide any support to the back and sofas bend the spine at wrong angles. Sitting like this for several hours every day causes problems like neck stiffness, back pain, strain in the shoulders, headache and irritation in the eyes.

Cases of these problems are increasing

According to doctors, now cases of chronic lower back pain and cervical pain are increasing even among youth in their 20s and 30s. Computer screens are often below eye level, causing people to sit leaning forward and putting excessive pressure on the spine. The problem is that the pain increases gradually, so people do not take it seriously. The effects of bad posture are not limited to just the muscles. This affects the breathing process, blood circulation, digestion and even concentration. When the body is uncomfortable, the mind is also unable to focus completely.

The good thing is that it does not require expensive office setup. Keeping the screen at eye level, sitting with feet on the floor, taking support of a towel or cushion behind the waist, and getting up every 30 to 40 minutes to walk or stretch can be very helpful. Dr. Pandita advises that if the pain persists for four to six weeks, increases or you feel numbness and weakness, then instead of treating yourself, you should consult a doctor or physiotherapist. If small habits are improved in time, then big problems related to work from home can be easily avoided.

How can it be fixed?

Doctors say that now even people in their 20s and 30s are coming in with chronic lower back pain, neck pain and stiffness in the shoulders. With the screen down, people sit leaning forward, which puts extra pressure on the spine. The good thing is that there is no need for expensive furniture for this. Keeping the screen at eye level, sitting with feet on the ground, giving support by placing a towel behind the waist and getting up and stretching every 30 to 40 minutes can be very helpful.
