In today’s busy life, a disease like diabetes sneaks up on anyone. According to the report of the World Health Organization (WHO), about 83 crore people around the world are suffering from diabetes and more than half of them do not even know that the sugar level in their body has increased. The situation is very serious in India also. The 2025 Diabetes Atlas report of the International Diabetes Federation (IDF) says that more than 10 crore people in India are affected by it and 2.5 crore people are still unaware of it. On the occasion of World Diabetes Day, we are telling you about those 5 symptoms which indicate diabetes. If proper precautions are started on time then it can be controlled.

How to take care of yourself?

According to Dr. V. Subramaniam, Chairman of the Endocrinology Department at a renowned hospital in Delhi, diabetes is called a silent killer because it silently damages the heart, kidneys, eyes and nerves. If you are experiencing symptoms like frequent urination or excessive thirst, fatigue, sudden weight loss and blurred vision, then get a blood test done immediately. These symptoms are mostly seen in type-2 diabetes, which occurs in 90 percent of the cases.

This symptom appears at night

The first symptom of diabetes is frequent urination. Actually, when blood sugar increases, the kidney tries to remove it. Due to this, one has to go to the toilet 4-5 times even at night. According to Dr. Subramaniam, patients often say that they cannot sleep throughout the night because they are unable to control urination. This is an early sign, ignoring which can result in kidney damage. According to the IDF report, if checkup is not done on time, 40 percent of diabetic patients in India develop kidney problems.

Feeling thirsty again and again is also dangerous

The second symptom is feeling strange thirst. Actually, due to increase in sugar the body gets dehydrated and the more water you drink, the more thirsty you feel. Dr. Subramaniam says that one always feels thirsty in summer, but even in cold weather, if you have to drink water frequently, then get your sugar checked. We saw in a recent study that this symptom first appeared in 70 percent of the patients. It is also said in the 2025 guidelines of ADA (American Diabetes Association) that increased thirst is a signal of hyperglycemia.

If you feel tired continuously then get checked

In diabetes, cells are not able to convert sugar into energy, due to which one feels tired all the time. According to Dr. Subramaniam, patients think that it is work-related fatigue, but it is due to diabetes. WHO study also shows that fatigue due to untreated diabetes doubles the risk of heart attack.

Pay attention to sudden weight loss

During type-1 diabetes, weight starts reducing rapidly because the body starts producing energy by breaking down fat and muscles. Dr. Subramaniam told that weight loss of 4-5 kg in a month is not normal. This is a sign of insulin deficiency. In the latest report of IDF, it was said that there are 10 million Type-1 cases in India, in which this symptom is prominent.

Be alert if your vision is blurry

The fifth symptom of diabetes is blurred vision. Actually, due to high sugar, the lens of the eyes gets swollen, due to which the vision becomes blurred. Dr. Subramaniam says that 20 percent of patients become blind due to diabetic retinopathy. The ADA report of 2025 says that 80 percent of cases can be saved by early checkup. This symptom is increasing rapidly in children also.

How should one avoid?

Dr. Subramaniam advises that if you want to control diabetes, then abstain from sugar, flour, processed food and red meat. Eat fiber rich things instead. IDF’s report published in 2025 states that 58 percent of cases can be prevented through a healthy diet. Apart from this, squeeze lemon in lukewarm water and drink it as soon as you wake up in the morning. Take oats, porridge or multigrain paratha for breakfast. Have breakfast between 7 and 8 in the morning, which contains 300 calories. Among fruits, choose apple, guava or papaya, eat less banana. Have brown rice, lentils, green vegetables and salad in lunch. Take only 2-3 chapattis. Eat a handful of almonds or sprouts as an evening snack.
