Nowadays diabetes has become very common. If sugar is not controlled then this disease silently hollows the entire body. According to the World Health Organization (WHO) report, uncontrolled diabetes causes serious damage to the nerves and blood vessels, which leads to problems like heart attack, kidney failure and loss of eyesight. The situation is even worse in India.

The 2025 Diabetes Atlas report of the International Diabetes Federation (IDF) says that more than 10 crore people in the country are suffering from diabetes and half of them are not even aware of the disease. Let us tell you what problems occur in the body due to not controlling sugar and what effect does it have on life?

This is the first problem

According to Dr. Shailja Patil, a cardiologist at a renowned hospital in Mumbai, high sugar increases cholesterol, blood pressure becomes high and plaque starts accumulating in the arteries. This may cause heart attack or stroke. The risk of heart attack is 4 times higher in patients suffering from diabetes. In the 2025 report of IDF, 40 percent of diabetes patients in India have been reported to have cardiovascular problems. At the same time, CDC’s 2025 report also says that hospitalization rates of heart failure and stroke due to diabetes are continuously increasing.

blood vessels become damaged

Dr. Patil said that the risk of kidney damage increases due to diabetes, because high levels of sugar damage the small blood vessels of the kidneys and protein starts appearing in the urine. This eventually leads to dialysis. In fact, uncontrolled diabetes increases the risk of kidney failure by five times. 25% of diabetic patients in India have chronic kidney disease. Initially there is swelling or fatigue, but ignoring it ruins your life.

This problem occurs in nerves

According to the doctor, high blood sugar causes the problem of nerve damage or diabetic neuropathy. Actually, due to high sugar, the nerves get less oxygen and nutrients, which causes tingling, numbness or pain in the hands and feet. This pain gives sleepless nights and the risk of infection increases.

effect on eyesight

Due to diabetes, eye problems start occurring or diabetic retinopathy occurs. Sugar causes the blood vessels in the retina to leak, which can cause blurred vision or blindness. According to Dr. Patil, 20 percent of patients suffer vision loss due to uncontrolled diabetes. ADA’s 2025 report says that 80 percent of cases can be saved by early checkup. According to IDF, 10 million people in India are affected by it.

Risk of nerve damage

The doctor told that the risk of getting foot ulcers also increases due to diabetes. Actually, due to high sugar, nerves get damaged and wounds do not heal due to poor blood flow. This causes infection to spread and amputation occurs. Uncontrolled diabetes increases the risk of foot ulcers by 25 times. In such a condition, patients do not feel burning or cutting pain in the legs, which makes the wound serious.
