Most of the bladder was lost
At the time of treatment of a 41 -year -old patient, most of his bladder was lost in the process of removing the tumor. The part that was left was extremely small and weak, due to which the bladder was not able to function normally. Apart from this, he also had cancer and final stage kidney disease. Therefore, both kidneys had to be removed. For the last seven years, he depended on dialysis. But now he has breathed a sigh of relief.
Bladder falls in the transplant list
Till now, for patients whose bladder was severely affected, the only option was that a part of the intestine should be used as a bladder. But this method produces complications in 80% of cases. Such as digestive system problems and kidney function declines. This is because microbiomes of digestive and urinary tract are quite different from each other.
Why was this transplant so difficult?
Transplanting bladder has been difficult because this organ is found in depth inside our stomach and its blood flows excessively. Due to these technical challenges, till now this process was not possible on humans. But this time doctors first added blood vessels to make surgery easier and then the bladder of the donor had developed in the body.
The patient’s condition has improved
A normal male bladder can store about 700 ml urin, but the patient’s remaining bladder had only 30 ml. After surgery, the condition of the patient has now been seen to improve and he has got rid of dialysis after 7 years.
This surgery has become a new milestone in medical science. Till now, organs like heart, kidney, liver are treated. But now the bladder has also been included in this list. This is a new hope for millions of patients who rely only on temporary measures.
