Uruk developed on the banks of the Euphrates River. The fertile land here was helpful in farming, trade and population growth. By about 4000 BC, more than 60 thousand residents had settled in this city. This rapid urbanization made Uruk a large settlement as well as one of the earliest true cities in human history.
Birth place of writing and organized society
One of Uruk’s most revolutionary contributions to the world was cuneiform. This was the first known writing system. Initially created to record business and administrative activity, this system laid the foundation for literacy, record keeping and literature. It was not until Uruk that humanity first moved from oral storytelling to written communication. Along with this, this city was also known for its organized governance and strong economic system.
Center of religion and magnificent architecture
Uruk was also home to some of the most revered religious structures of ancient Mesopotamia. Large ziggurats and pyramid-like temples were built. Here there were temples dedicated to Inanna, the goddess of love and war.

The legacy of Uruk also lives on through ancient literature. The Epic of Gilgamesh is one of the world’s oldest surviving stories. Gilgamesh, the half-mythical king of Uruk, is depicted as a heroic figure who seeks glory and immortality.
How is Uruk today?
Thousands of years later, Uruk has transformed into the archaeological site of Warka. This area situated in southern Iraq now appears to be full of scattered ruins. Here one can now see broken walls, the remains of a temple, and the outlines of the foundations of what was once the world’s most advanced urban settlement. Now this place is deserted but despite this, a precious glimpse of early civilization is visible here. Researchers here continue to excavate and study Warqa.
