Today’s war is not fought only with guns or missiles. Now a new weapon of war is micro drone. They are so small that they can fit in the palm, but their power and technology are challenging even big weapons. Micro drone is a small Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) i.e. aircraft without a pilot. Its weight ranges from a few hundred grams to two kilos. It is equipped with cameras, sensors and small motors, so that it can not only fly but can also monitor heights.
They are specially prepared for espionage, surveillance and intelligence missions. They go into enemy territory and collect video recording, location tracking and other important data.
Hundreds of micro drones become an army
When many micro drones work together in a group, they are called swarm drones. They can simultaneously attack enemy positions or gather small information about the area. Their small size makes them almost invisible to radar or normal defense systems, hence they are being considered the most dangerous weapon of future wars.
Role of micro drones in battlefield
Almost all the big countries of the world, America, China, Russia and Israel have now made micro drones a part of their military strategy. Earlier they were used only for surveillance, but now they are playing an important role in attacks also. Recently, Russia carried out a drone attack on Ukraine, in which the electricity grid was targeted and the entire area was plunged into darkness. Such swarm attacks are called “Death Swarm” because they are almost impossible to defend against.
How do swarm drones work?
Swarm drones operate entirely through artificial intelligence (AI) and computer networks. Every drone is connected to each other, making the swarm work like a living system. First the mission is planned, then all the drones are flown together. After flight, they identify the target with their sensors and cameras and either attack or send back information as per need. If one drone is destroyed in a mission, the remaining drones continue the mission without interruption. This is the reason why swarm technology is deciding the direction of the coming wars.
How to protect yourself from micro drones
It is not easy to deal with these small drones because they fly fast and are very small. Nevertheless, many countries have adopted new techniques to stop them.
Some major measures are as follows.
- Radio Jamming: The drone’s signal is blocked and brought down.
- Anti Drone Gun: These are special weapons which target and disable drones.
- Net Drone: Drones that catch enemy drones by throwing nets.
- AI surveillance cameras: These cameras detect the activity of micro drones and alert the security agencies.
- Many countries including India have implemented registration and control policies for drone operations so that they cannot be misused.
