It was not just a box, but it was a window through which people remained connected to the hustle and bustle of the world while sitting at their homes. Sometimes it was the biggest source of entertainment, sometimes the most reliable source of news. Technology progressed, mobile and internet came, but the hold of TV is still as strong.
That is why 21st November reminds the world every year that even a screen can connect humans, show the path to society and bring the truth to the world. This is the reason why World Television Day is being celebrated today. Although today is not TV’s birthday. Then the question arises that when today is not the birthday of TV, then why is it celebrated on 21st November.
Why is World Television Day being celebrated?
In the year 1996, the United Nations (UN) organized the World Television Forum for the first time on 21 November. On this platform, journalists, leaders, policy makers and media experts from all over the world sat together and a very important question was asked. At that time TV was the most influential medium of communication. Mobile and internet were in their beginning. TV was the only medium through which the world was able to see each other’s happiness, crisis, war, sports, scientific achievements, everything. Therefore, the United Nations gave the message that television is not just entertainment but a bridge of global dialogue and with this in mind, November 21 was officially declared World Television Day.
How TV erased the boundaries of the world
TV did everything that no other medium did with such power. Like showing live scenes from battlefields, bringing Parliament debates to homes, giving immediate information about calamities and natural disasters, showing space missions live, giving a new direction to democracy, awareness and education. In such a situation, for the first time people not only heard but also saw and this further strengthened the expectation of truth in the society.
TV in modern times
By 2025, TV has changed into many new forms. Such as digital TV, HD and 4K broadcasting, AI-based studios and virtual newsrooms, integration with OTT platforms, yet in times of crisis such as a pandemic, emergency or big news—people turn to TV channels first. TV is still considered the first source of information i.e. the most reliable first source.
Why is World Television Day celebrated?
The purpose of celebrating this day is simple, but its depth is huge because TV symbolizes the power of information. It connects people, gives direction to the society. It tells us how global events affect our lives. It is a natural combination of democracy, education, awareness and entertainment. According to the United Nations, TV is still the largest source of video viewing in the world. There were approximately 1.63 billion TV households worldwide in 2017, which is expected to increase to more than 1.74 billion in the coming years.
