World’s First Iron Cased Rocket: Long before modern warfare turned to missiles and rockets, an Indian ruler revolutionized the battlefield with technology far ahead of his time. The 18th century Mysore ruler Tipu Sultan and his father Hyder Ali built the world’s first iron-cased rocket. This was an invention that surprised the British. These rockets were recognized as Mysore rockets.
Birth of Mysore Rocket
Mysore was at the forefront of technological innovation under the leadership of Tipu Sultan in the late 18th century. His rocket used an iron casing instead of the traditional cardboard used in Europe. With the help of this iron cover, he could withstand high pressure and travel up to 2 kilometers. These rockets were attached to long bamboo poles, due to which their flight remained stable.
Used in Anglo-Mysore War
Tipu Sultan and Hyder Ali used these rockets against the British army in the Anglo-Mysore War. These rockets were also used extensively in the battle of Polilur in 1780. These rockets caused huge damage to the British Army, due to which the army had to face chaos. The British had never encountered such a weapon before, so to them it was just like iron falling from the sky.
technology behind rockets
The strength of the iron casing was very important for the power of the rocket. With this, more gunpowder could be filled inside the rocket so that proper thrust and more distance could be achieved. The bamboo rods attached to it worked like a rudder, due to which the rocket remained stable in the air.
Who were they used against?
These rockets were mostly used against the British East India Company. Along with this, Tipu Sultan also used them against regional rivals like Marathas and Nizam of Hyderabad. These people used to make alliance with the British. Tipu Sultan used these rockets to defend his capital Srirangapatna during the Fourth Anglo-Mysore War.
