Xeroderma Pigmentosum Causes: Sunlight is very beneficial for us, it helps in producing Vitamin D and is very important for many important processes of the body. But imagine, if someone’s health forces him to stay away from sunlight, then what would life be like? According to reports, this is what an 11-year-old boy from Spain, Pol Dominguez, is facing. For him, summer holidays are not an opportunity to play outside, but a time to stay indoors, because sunlight can prove fatal for him. Pol has a rare disease called xeroderma pigmentosum, which directly affects his skin and eyes. Let us tell you what this disease is and what problems people suffering from it have to face.

What is xeroderma pigmentosum?

Xeroderma pigmentosum is a very rare genetic problem. In this disease, the system present in the body stops working, which repairs the damage caused by ultraviolet rays. That is, if sunlight falls on a person suffering from this disease, the damage caused to the skin does not get cured. This problem occurs only when the child inherits bad genes from both parents. Therefore, XP is considered an autosomal recessive disease. It is not easy to live with this disease. Daylight becomes a danger for them. Even just a few minutes of sunlight can cause severe burns, blisters or severe pain on their skin. UV rays come not only from the sun but also from some tube lights, lamps and tanning beds, so people with XP also have to avoid artificial light.

How do its initial effects look?

Even mild exposure to sunlight can cause freckles, black-and-white spots and irregular pigmentation to appear on the skin of XP patients. With time these marks become darker or lighter. The biggest danger is that they may develop skin cancer at an early age due to UV damage not being repaired. Basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, and melanoma are seen several times more often in people with XP.

How is the routine in this disease?

People with XP cannot go out during the day. They have to prepare complete security-

  • head-to-toe clothing
  • wide hat
  • UV proof glasses
  • Sunscreen with high SPF and broad spectrum
  • windows with uv filters

And all this becomes part of everyday life. Many families try to travel or do important work during dim hours, so that the risk of disease is reduced.
