The year 2025 remained average for Tamil cinema. The biggest hit of Kollywood this year was Rajinikanth starrer ‘Coolie’. This film earned more than Rs 500 crore worldwide. Nevertheless, this film by Thalaivar and Lokesh Kanagaraj did not live up to the expectations and could not take advantage of the huge pre-release buzz and promotion. How was the report card of Kollywood films in the year 2025?
While Rajinikanth’s Coolie achieved the top position in the worldwide collections, Ajith Kumar had two films released this year, Vidamuyarchi and Good Bad Ugli. Although Vidamuyarchi failed to woo the audience, Good Bad proved to be the next big success. Apart from Coolie and Good Bad Ugli, no other star-studded film could perform well at the box office in the year 2025. Thug Life, starring Kamal Haasan and directed by Mani Ratnam, flopped badly. The performance of Suriya’s Retro and Sivakarthikeyan’s Madrasi were also mediocre.
At the same time, Kollywood box office was missing Thalapathy Vijay, whose film was not released in 2025. His last film, Jana Nayakan, is scheduled to release on January 9, 2026, coinciding with the Pongal festival.
Low budget films did wonders
Apart from big stars, some medium and low budget films also got support from the audience. Where Pradeep Ranganathan’s Dragon earned more than Rs 1 crore. ‘Thalaivan Thalaivi’ and ‘Tourist Family’ proved to be two surprising films of Tamil cinema this year. Both these low budget films not only impressed the audience but also performed well at the box office.
