Unemployment has started growing again in India. In May 2025, the country’s average unemployment rate increased to 5.6 percent, compared to 5.1 percent in April. It has had the most impact on the youth between the ages of 15 to 29 years. The unemployment rate has increased from 13.8 percent to 15 percent.

At the same time, the situation is more worrying in the case of women. In April, where 14.4 percent unemployment was, it has now reached 16.3 percent. Whereas, this figure was 14.5 percent in men.

Unemployment increased in both rural and urban

The unemployment rate in cities increased from 17.2 percent to 17.9 percent. At the same time, this figure has increased from 12.3 percent to 13.7 percent in the villages too. The report says that there has been a decrease in farming related jobs in villages. In April, where 45.9 percent people were engaged in agriculture, now this figure has increased to 43.5 percent. Instead, people are now searching for work in industrial and service sectors.

Women are now taking part in work in small numbers

Women participation in rural India i.e. Labor Force Participation Rate (LFPR) has come down from 38.2 percent to 36.9 percent. The reason for this is being told that now less women are working in the fields without wages or remuneration.

Apart from this, the ratio of working people (WPR) has also decreased. WPR in the country has come down from 52.8 percent to 51.7 percent. Among women, it has fallen from 32.5 percent to 31.3 percent.

What is this PLFS survey?

These figures have been extracted from the new monthly edition of Periodic Labor Force Survey (PLFS). For the first time in May, it was released in monthly, which revealed a picture related to unemployment and functioning of every month. In this survey, more than 89,000 houses and about 3.8 lakh people across the country were talked about, so that it can be known that people are actually working or facing unemployment.

So will unemployment grow further?

The government has just described it as associated with seasonal reasons, such as the end of the farming season. But if new employment does not come or the rural economy has not improved, then unemployment can increase even more in the coming months.
