45 Minute Class Rule: Usually, as soon as classes start in schools, the first question of children is when will the period end. Sometimes the period of 45 minutes passes in the blink of an eye, and sometimes that time seems much longer. But have you ever wondered why in most schools one period lasts only 40 to 45 minutes? Earlier a class used to last for 60 minutes
Until the 19th and early 20th centuries, a period in schools was usually 60 minutes. In those times, studies took place not only in the morning but also in the afternoon. The children got a break of about three hours in between, in which they would go home and have lunch and then return to school again. However, afternoon classes were not liked by both students and teachers. It was believed that after eating food, children’s concentration decreases and it became difficult to study in summer. For this reason, education experts started a study on children’s mental fatigue and learning ability.
Change came after research by scientists
In the beginning of the 20th century, psychologists and education experts conducted many experiments. These researchers found that studying continuously for 60 minutes can be tiring for children, this affects their ability to learn. Experts had suggested that classes of 30 minutes for children and 45 to 50 minutes for older students would be effective. He believed that in shorter class time one can concentrate better and the effect of studies is better.
The 45 minute rule came into effect for the first time in 1911.
On August 22, 1911, the then Prussian Minister of Culture, August von Trott zu Solz, issued an order that the duration of a period in Higher Educational Institutes would be 45 minutes. This decision was taken on the basis of the recommendations of education experts at that time. After the implementation of the 45-minute period, the entire weekly study schedule could be covered only in the morning time. Due to this, afternoon classes were abolished and students started getting time in the afternoon. However, not everyone welcomed this change. Many teachers believed that 45 minutes is not enough time to study. They said that it would be difficult to explain a subject in detail in such a short time and studies would be limited to just finishing the study quickly. Some teachers also said that due to short period, haste in studies will increase and the thinking ability of the students will be affected.

The model gradually became popular all over the world
Despite opposition, the 45-minute model proved successful and gradually began to be implemented in other parts of Germany. Later many countries adopted this system. Even today, classes of around 45 minutes are normal in countries like Germany, England, Britain and Poland. However, in some countries periods of 50 minutes or 60 minutes run. Recently, in many schools, experiments were also started on long period model of 60 and 90 minutes, so that students could get more time to understand a subject.
