Steam Therapy Precautions: Most of the people resort to steam in case of cold or blocked nose. Steam of hot water opens the nose and provides relief, but is it right to take steam every time the nose is blocked? Do you know what the doctors say in this matter and what came to light in the research? Know what are the advantages and disadvantages of taking steam?

Why is taking steam common?

When the nose gets blocked it becomes difficult to breathe. This happens due to cold, sinus, allergy or dust. By taking steam, the mucus accumulated in the nose becomes thinner and breathing becomes easier. According to research published in the ‘Journal of Respiratory Medicine’ in 2025, repeated intake of steam can damage the delicate skin and mucous membrane of the nose. In the research, a study was conducted on 400 people, out of which 60 percent took steam more than three times a week. Of these, 35 percent people faced problems like burning sensation and dryness in the nose.

Disadvantages of taking steam

Dr. Ajay Gupta, Senior ENT Specialist at Fortis Hospital, Delhi, says that taking steam is beneficial, but taking steam in excess can be dangerous. Hot steam can burn the thin skin of the nose, causing burning, redness and sometimes bleeding from the nose. If the water is too hot or you keep it too close to your face, the skin may get damaged.

These problems also bother me

He told that taking steam opens the nose, but if you take steam in every small blocked nose then the natural moisture of the nose can be lost. Due to this, the mucus balance of the nose deteriorates and the risk of infection increases.

The study also revealed the danger

A 2024 study in the ‘International Journal of Otolaryngology’ found that people who took steam more than five times a week had more complaints of dryness in the nose and chronic sinusitis. It is more dangerous in children and the elderly, because their skin and nasal membranes are more sensitive.

When and how to take Steam?

According to Dr. Gupta, take steam only when the nose is badly blocked and breathing is difficult. In case of mild blocked nose, gargling with saline drops or salt water is sufficient. While taking steam the temperature of water should not be too hot. Boil water and let it cool for 5 minutes. After this, keep the face 12-15 inches away and do not take steam for more than 5-7 minutes. After taking steam, wipe the nose with a slightly wet cloth and apply moisturizer, so that there is no dryness.
