US President Donald Trump claimed on Sunday that he can end the ongoing tension between Pakistan and Afghanistan ‘very quickly’. Trump said this during the signing ceremony of the Cambodia-Thailand Peace Agreement held in Malaysia.
Trump said, ‘As you know, my government has ended eight wars in just eight months. We are ending a war every month. Now only one is left – the dispute between Pakistan and Afghanistan – but I will resolve that too very soon. He said that clashes have recently started between Pakistan and Afghanistan, but he knows the leaders of both the countries and is confident that the matter will be resolved soon. At the end of his speech, Trump claimed that no American president could do what his administration did. He said, other presidents start wars, we end them – that’s the difference.
Tension increased in Pakistan-Afghanistan
In recent times, clashes have increased on the Durand Line between Pakistan and Afghanistan. This 2,611 km long border was decided during the British rule, which Afghanistan never formally recognized. According to reports, Pakistan recently attacked terrorist targets inside Afghanistan with drones and fighter jets, while Taliban fighters captured several posts.
Cambodia–Thailand peace agreement
Trump was speaking at the ceremony marking the signing of the historic peace agreement between Cambodia and Thailand. He said, ‘We did what people said was impossible. Only this one agreement has saved the lives of lakhs of people. This is a historic day for the people of South-East Asia. Trump praised the ‘bold initiative’ of the leaders of both the countries and said that America has played an important role in this agreement.
’32 year old struggle stopped with a phone call’
Trump said that earlier this year there had been clashes on the border between the two countries, but the violence stopped due to America’s intervention. He said, ‘I was in Scotland at that time and spoke to both the leaders on phone the whole day. It was unbelievable how quickly everything was resolved. Along with the peace treaty, Trump also announced that America has signed a trade agreement with Cambodia and an agreement on critical minerals with Thailand. He said that America will maintain strong trade relations with both the countries as long as they maintain peace.
