Born on 18 July 1971 in Amritsar, Sukhwinder started singing on stage at the age of just 8 years. When Sukhwinder sang the song ‘Sa Re Ga Ma Pa’ from the 1970 film ‘Abhinetri’, he received a lot of praise and surprised the audience. Not only this, at the age of 13 he had composed the tune of the evergreen Bhangra song ‘Tutak Tutak Tutiya’ for popular singer Malkit Singh, which is heard widely even today.

Worked with AR Rahman

He took classical music lessons from Guru Professor BS Narang and started working as a ‘music arranger’ with Laxmikant-Pyarelal in Mumbai. Later, he left India and went to England and America to learn and understand the arts of music, which gave a new flight to his career. After coming back to India, he joined AR Rahman.

He composed the music named ‘Thayya Thayya’, for which AR Rahman composed the lyrics from the Sufi poetry of Gulzar and Bulleh Shah. Then their duo created the song ‘Chaiya Chaiya’ from the 1998 film ‘Dil Se’, which is very popular even today.

Sukhwinder received awards

Apart from this, he received the Filmfare Best Male Playback Singer Award for the song ‘Chaiya Chaiya’. ‘Chak De India’ of 2007 and ‘Haule Haule’ of 2008 also received awards. However, his song ‘Jai Ho’ made India proud by winning Oscar and Grammy Award. Then he also received the National Award for 2014’s ‘Bismil’.
