India’s legendary tennis player Rohan Bopanna has put an end to his 22-year long tennis career. 45-year-old Bopanna played the last match of his career in the Paris Masters 1000 tournament. In the same year, Bopanna had set the record of being the oldest player to win the Grand Slam. Besides, he also became the oldest player in the world to become number-1 player in doubles tennis.
On his retirement, he said, “How can you say goodbye to something that has given importance to your life. This journey of more than 20 years is coming to an end. I am retiring from tennis. Representing India has been a matter of greatest pride for me. Whenever I stepped on the court, I played for the tricolor.”
Bopanna ended his historic career as a two-time Grand Slam winner. He won the 2024 Australian Open men’s doubles title with Matthew Ebden, and also won the 2017 French Open mixed doubles title with Gabriela Dabrowski. Along with this, he played Grand Slam finals on four other occasions.
Goodbye, but not the end…
Rohan Bopanna shared a retirement note on Instagram, in which he wrote, “Goodbye, but not the end.” He said that tennis is not just a game for him, but it has given importance to his life and brought him from lost direction to the right path.
Finished fourth in 2016 Olympics
The pair of Rohan Bopanna and Sania Mirza finished fourth in the mixed doubles event of the 2016 Olympics. He also participated in Grand Slam tournaments several times in singles competition, but got more success in his career in doubles. He started playing professional tennis in 2003, during which he achieved many historic achievements.
