Two American courts have banned the deportation of an Indian-origin Subramanyam Vedam to America. Vedam, 64, spent 43 years in jail in a murder case, but his conviction was recently quashed. Now, the Immigration Department wanted to send them to India, which the courts have currently put on hold.
Vedam’s family fondly calls him ‘Subu’. He is currently kept in a detention center in Louisiana. It is connected to an airstrip specially built for deportation flights.
Last week, an immigration judge ordered a stay on his deportation until the Bureau of Immigration Appeals decides whether it will review the case, the AP reported. On the same day, the District Court of Pennsylvania also put a stay on his deportation.
Innocence proved after 43 years
Vedam was arrested in 1982 for the murder of his friend Thomas Kinser. Kinser (then 19) went missing in December 1980, and his body was found in the woods nine months later. According to the police, Kinsar was last seen with Vedam.
In 1983, Vedam was sentenced to life imprisonment, and he was also given additional punishment in the drugs case. His lawyers said that the entire case was based on circumstantial evidence. No witnesses, no clear motive and no concrete evidence.
Teaching and providing education in prison
While in jail, Vedam obtained three degrees, became a teacher and imparted education to many prisoners. His father died in 2009 and mother in 2016.
Got justice after 43 years, but now new crisis
In August this year, a Pennsylvania court quashed Vedam’s conviction after it emerged that the prosecution had hidden crucial ballistic evidence for years. Vedam was released from prison on October 3, 2025, but was immediately detained by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).
Now ICE wants to send him to India on the basis of past drug convictions, while the Department of Homeland Security says that the overturning of the murder case has no impact on the drugs case. Vedam’s sister and lawyers have argued that wrongful imprisonment of more than four decades is a bigger punishment than any small crime, and the government should take a humanitarian approach.
